The interdisciplinary, international research project DECIPHER – Deciphering the pandemic public sphere – takes a holistic view on government communication during the COVID-19 pandemic. Applying a variety of methods, the research team gathered data from Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, the Netherlands, Sweden as well as the USA. Including the perspective of politicians, citizens and the media, the DFG-funded project provides findings and lessons learnt for an improved future governmental crisis communication.

The DECIPHER research project focusses on three main actors within the pandemic public spere: the government, the news media and the citizens including their participation on social media.

Which crisis communication strategies were applied by governments and health institutions? What risk and instructional messages did they construct to communicate with citizens and the media? And to what extent did they meet citizen’s expectations? How did legacy media frame both the pandemic and risk messages of governments and health institutions? And how was the COVID-19 pandemic reflected on social media?

Spokesperson of the DECIPHER-project Prof Dr Martin Löffelholz from TU Ilmenau and Dr Robin Janzik from BfR cordially invite you to this scientific workshop, which will provide input on the challenges and future opportunities of risk and crisis communication as well as the opportunity to exchange ideas with (inter-)national experts from the field.

Start: 14:00 h
End: 20:00 h
